Dead Writings – Second Dawn; the remaking of a classic

Dawn of the dead is a fantastic film. So when I heard it was being remade I, like so many others was prepared with pitchforks and torches ready to tear it to pieces. But here’s the thing; It’s not that bad.

I’m going to start with the good points. Firstly pace: This is a very lean, quick film. Whereas the original takes place over a longer time frame, the remake goes straight for the action. By the time we’re at the mall, the outbreak is barely a day old. Then there are the zombies. I hate to admit it, but I have no problem with fast zombies. They run faster than humans. That’s fine, as they ignore pain, don’t hyperventilate and don’t care if they hurt themselves. I’m sure in a few months all their legs will fall off, but in terms of the movie it’s not a big issue for me.

Next on the list of pros is the attention to detail. Whether it’s the BP lorry, or people being pushed around in wheelbarrows there are subtle references to the original. It isn’t just the cameos of most of the original cast, it’s the smaller things. This film was made by people who love the original.

Finally, there’s the acting. Sarah Polley and Jake Weber work really well together and this adds a real emotional heart to the film.

But I have huge problems with this film. It starts with characters arguing, panicking and even fighting each other. But all of a sudden, this stops. There are several scenes where totally ridiculous plans are proposed and everyone simply agrees.

No one questions anything, no one has a bad feeling about this. The pivotal scene discussing the characters escape from the mall is a ridiculous high risk ploy. But everyone is fine with it. It makes no sense.

In the original characters changed their minds all the time. They stopped to check they were doing the right thing, changed plans when they weren’t working, and argued about the issues. They didn’t suddenly decide on the best plan ever. Indeed, it’s ending is made glorious because a character suddenly, totally, changes their mind.

Watch the dawn remake. Enjoy it. But afterwards think. If you were in the same situation, what would you have done?
